The Long Tail

I read The Long Tail on the plane this weekend. If you have never read Chris Anderson's blog or you haven't spent a lot of time online in the last two years, it's a good read. Otherwise, while it's highly informative and right on the money, it may be old news to you. That's because The Long Tail concept has been so thoroughly spoken about in the last 12 - 18 months that it's old news. However, Anderson does have some thought-provoking ideas around electronic versus physical inventory. He'll also tell you some of the history of Amazon.com and similar sites that you may not know.

Net net, if you're looking for a quick read and a primer on The Long Tail, this is a great book for you.

This book is getting a lot of press with various blogs. I have nto read it but seems to me that this is the set of ideas that has been espoused a 100 times before with the one-to-one marketing and is just a rehash of old term in new packaging.

I hit this up a while ago while working on my MBA. I wrote a 30-pager on how the long tail is specifically altering the way movies and entertainment are delivered. More specifically, how Netflix changed the movie distribution industry. It's certainly an interesting idea, but I seriously question its value across industries. Sure, there are some places where it's breat, but who wants a catagory killer business that sells 10,000 kinds of picture hangers?
